When riding at night or in cloudy weather, it is necessary to equip the bike with lighting according to the need. To see or be seen, lights with rechargeable battery or regular batteries; there is now a very wide range of lighting. This post is intended to enlighten you on the issue.
There are several types of recharging device : battery, USB charging or dynamo.
There are fixed lights, but these are less practical because they can be stolen and do not allow to easily change bicycles. The removable lights are therefore an interesting solution. They have a quick attach system that facilitates installation and the removal of the light.
For front lighting, it is preferable to fix the lamp on the handlebars, on the fork or on the front hub. For the rear, the seatpost forms an ideal location in terms of height to be seen from a distance. You can also fix the lamp on the seatstays.
The power of the light is measured in lumen (lm) also in lux(lx); Unit that measures luminous flux per unit area. The higher these indicators are, the stronger the lighting is.
The luminous emittance of the lighting is chosen according to the conditions in which you ride the bike, on an illuminated road the rider needs to seen while on an unlit road the rider needs to see the road.
To be seen on an illuminated road: average power 20 lumens is enough.
20lumens lighting output for front and 11 lumens for rear. Weighing 11g each and being visible up to 800 meters, they are perfect for cities where the roads are lit. They have a battery life of up to 11hrs (depending on which light mode is selected among the 5 available) with a rechargeable USB battery, battery and low battery indicator.
35 lumen at the front and 20 lumen at the rear. Weighing 44g, 4-7hrs of battery life depending on the light operating mode and a low battery indicator. Its shape allows more or less light in width.
View on an unlit road: The lighting must be of a higher power. With a minimum of 50 lumen upto 400 lumen
Lighting power of 80 lumen for a weight of 35 grams and visibility upto 1200 meters. It will perfectly illuminate the low-lit roads offering you the necessary vision and ride upto 60hrs of battery, according to the light mode selected among the 5. Like the other Knog models shown, it is USB rechargeable.
70 lumen rear lighting with 5 different light modes having upto 20hrs of battery life, weighing of 50g. It is perfect to be seen from distance in minimum lighting conditions. With a low charge and battery indicator, this model is also USB rechargeable.
It is one of the most powerful models of the brand; 250 lumen to illuminate the darkest roads (available in 400 lumens version also). It has 8 light modes with a battery life of upto 5hrs operated with a rechargeable lithium USB battery weighing 75g.
Urban lighting is mainly used to be seen, by direct lighting of other users (rear light) or by reflection on the ground. A little different the Monkey Light systems are very interesting; developing a high light output that will illuminate the roadway on your way and offer you different patterns on your wheel as it rotates.
